Sales Are Local

Your greatest potential for sales is to your local market. So focus on your local market for the greatest success.

Even though people use the Internet to find products and compare prices, their preference is to buy offline. And when they buy offline they buy locally.

If you are just starting your business, start up locally. And even if you have a web site now, you can improve your sales by going local and focusing your advertisements on local customers.

Studies show that at least two-thirds of the people do the research online and by offline.

There's no doubt that many sales are made on eBay, through Amazon and through many other large web sites. But there are more made through local shops and local home businesses and trade shows.

There are many reasons behind this. One, of course, is the fear of Internet fraud. And the lack of delivery of products.

But above all, people want personal service and they want to see first hand what they are buying.

Recognizing the benefits of dealing locally, internet companies are stressing the importance of local purchases.

The popular craigslist advertising service specifically admonishes people to buy locally. This is what craigslist posts on every advertisement.

"Avoid scams & fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, or any promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee."

So how does this affect you?

Once you make a sale to a customer offline you will have established a personal relationship and you have a customer that you will then be able to send as a trusting buyer to your website.

Once a customer meets you, gets to know you and sees the products that you are selling, that customer will be more likely to pick up the phone and call you or visit your website and order.

Drop Shipping On A Budget

Local sales means local inventory. You have to have a small amount of inventory on hand.

Yes you might be all excited about drop shipping. But most people who start that way lose money and fail. At best, they might break even.

Put your money into inventory that you can sell locally rather than spending money on a big website or ecommerce store on the Internet that you can use for drop shipping.

Too many people spend huge dollars on websites and on-line stores that end up as failures because they not able to get search engine position or don't know how to properly advertise or promote the site.

They would have been better off to buy some initial inventory and advertise on Craig's list, send out postcards to local prospects, advertise in local penny saver newspapers than to have spent the money on a website.

You do not have to have a lot of inventory but you should have some. You should have it for no other reason that you can take pictures, and understand the quality of what you are selling.

Why is that important? You will have to write descriptions of your product in your advertising and you can only write descriptions credibly if you have the product in front of you.

A small amount of inventory is not expensive. You only need a few salt lamps, a few pieces of handpainted glass, or a few Christmas ornaments to get started.
