Do not carry much cash with you. Use your ATM card and Credit card. Be sure to have PIN numbers for your credit cards. Some places require a PIN for you to use a credit card.
Do not keep all your documents and credit cards in one location. Make copies of the documents and have a second credit card and ATM card with a companion or in a second bag so if you lose one set, you are not blind.

Stay out of run down areas and don't wander around at night in lonely or unlighted areas. But that makes sense anywhere in the world, doesn't it?
Before you buy something, think about and be sure of how you can ship it home. You are likely to find that you may have to carry it yourself.
